Mmm ..... I wasn’t sure I’d like this book since the author says she’d 'rarely met a woman who doesn’t struggle with' Compulsive Comparison Syndrome!

Apparently, when we feel worse off than others we can be resentful and envious.  On the other hand when we feel better off we can be proud, arrogant or boastful.  Seemingly, there is no escape from the condition - even for Christians, who may also take pride in their level of commitment, such as attendance and involvement at church as well as their financial giving, and other worthy activities.

Published by The Good Book Company this short book (100 pages) with its sub-title How to experience true contentment alerts the reader to the possibilities for change.

Our natural instinct as humans is pointed out as we look to others for security and significance.  Unwittingly the ‘I’ part of our nature becomes the centre and focus of attention, which is, at heart, idol worship – putting self in the place where God should be. The author suggests a change in our perspective and using the abilities God has given, to enjoy being ourselves as unique human beings, growing in character, ‘to be conformed to the likeness of his son’ - Romans 8:29.

As well as personally taking on board some of the ideas, the book made me think about the pressures on parents in bringing up children in a ‘must have’ world – and for teenagers coping with peer pressure in having to be seen to be ‘cool’.

If you're interested, please feel free to borrow my copy.
