SpratleyAfter a long search we are delighted to welcome Grant Spratley to LCBC. He comes with a wide range of experience to take up the position of the church's Youth and Children's Pastor - we look forward to his contribution as he comes alongside our wonderful team of volunteers, encouraging and giving input to help and develop the work with the many youngsters we have contact with.

Grant, his wife Claudine and son Justin are settling in to the village and finding their way around.

John StottOne of the world's most influential figures in the spread of the evangelical faith over the past sixty years, John Stott died on 27 July at the age of 90. Perhaps most easily identified as the Rector of All Souls, Langham Place, his preaching and writing extended around the world. Basic Christianity has been the introduction to Jesus Christ for many people since it was first published in 1958; another classic from his pen, The Cross of Christ, is among the key books in our online list. As Rector Emeritus he was still preaching regularly at All Souls when Neil and Liz Turton attended the church between 1990 and 1997. Liz's father, Desmond Yow, also worked alongside and was mentored by John Stott as a teenager and young man in the 1950s. Our pastors still benefit in their sermon preparation from the great biblical insights to be found in the many commentaries he has written on various books of the Bible. Not only was he renowned for his Bible teaching; he was also able to engage with the real world which led him to found the London Institute for Contemporary Christianity and write the book Issues facing Christians Today - this can also be ordered through our online bookstore or at church.

Geoffrey Grogan

Geoffrey Grogan, who died on 31 August aged 86, was principal of the Bible Training Institute in Glasgow for twenty-one years. Among those who benefited from his teaching were Jeff and Hannah Steadman, Myrtle Spencer, June Hathersmith and Peter Grainger. As well as masterminding the move of the college from the Bothwell Street site he also oversaw the transition to the new International Christian College (Kat Fairweather, Tim Burnham), incorporating Northumbria Bible College (Geoff and Frances Wood), previously Lebanon Missionary Training College (Fred and Ruth Webb). Jeff remembers him as the gentle giant - a very tall man - and for the consistency of his theological teaching over the years. Last year he published The Faith Once Entrusted to the Saints; at the time of his death a free online course entitled Getting more deeply into your Bible was being planned, and this is now up and running.

Academy student placements at LCBC

Christians in Sport exists to reach the world of sport for Christ and has done so for over 25 years. Their day to day work has two major aspects to it: first, encouraging and training thousands of players and coaches to represent Christ in their sports clubs, and secondly to help and support these Christian sportspeople as they share the Good News of Jesus with their team mates.

The Christians in Sport Academy is a 6 month gap programme for young adults (18-19 year olds) who are serious about representing Christ and sharing the Good News of Jesus with their sporting mates. The Academy started in 2005 and  involves sport, discipleship, evangelism, Bible training, mission and the local church (LCBC being the placement church for two students in 2011, Robbie and George). The CIS head office is in Bicester and this is where the students will be based whilst on the academy.
