Multimedia Sports Quiz

On Saturday Nov 29th, the church was transformed as nearly 70 people took part in a six-round multimedia sports quiz hosted by Christians in Sport. It was a great evening as a handful of genuine sports players and plenty of 'enthusiastic armchair critics' pitted their wits against the quiz masters.

It was encouraging that half of those present were visitors to the church. At half time, Welsy spoke from Mark chapter 8, challenging us all with the words of Jesus: 'What good is it for a person to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?'.

The world of sport is driven by competition to be the best. As sports people, our competitive natures are a gift from God and yet sadly this can consume us and winning easily becomes all that matters. The words of Jesus act as a sharp challenge against this, for our worldly successes are only momentary.

Wellsy spoke about Boris Becker, who won Wimbledon in 1985 at the tender age of 17. Yet after an illustrious career where he spoke of 'having had it all', he still felt empty. Similarly, the sudden accidental death last week of Australian cricket star Phillip Hughes has been a sombre reminder that life is far more fragile than we like to believe. It is for this reason that the state of our soul is of greatest importance.

As we begin to look expectantly forward to Christmas, we have the opportunity to be reminded of the reason that Jesus Christ entered the world. As the angel declared at his birth: 'Today in the town of David, a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord'. It is only through knowing this Saviour that our souls are secure. May you know this to be true for yourself this Christmas time.

Thank you to Christians in Sport for hosting such a great evening and for all those who worked hard to pull the event together and then return the church to normal again ready for Sunday morning!
