SPECTRUM SPECIAL 2019

Once a year, Spectrum, the arts club that meets twice monthly at Long Crendon Baptist Church hosts a guest artist to teach something new creatively.

In October 2019, Jackie Birchall who runs Purple Urchin, a glass decorating business, came to demonstrate her amazing skills. She explained the complicated process of cutting glass to specific shapes in order to build up a particular picture. Apparently glass workers have to carry a pack of plasters with them as they regularly cut themselves when working with the glass. They literally put blood, sweat and tears into each piece of glass art. We learned about the different types of coloured glass and how to let the glass speak. Jackie will get inspired by the colour, texture and shape of particular pieces of glass and turn them into stunning creations.

Jackie also shared about how her new found faith has inspired her creativity. At one point she was giving up on her art but now feels that the Lord has given her a gift and that she should use it. She uses recycled glass to minimise her impact on the environment along with old pieces of driftwood and other natural artefacts that she finds. Much of her art is now inspired by nature and her faith.

Spectrum members were given a myriad of previously cut and ground glass and challenged to create their own designs. The brief was keep it simple and let the glass speak to you. Our artists created several boats and plants, a hedgehog made from one piece of glass, an image of Elvis, the Cross of Christ, a pair of angel wings enveloping some scripture, a face and figures representing family. At the end of the day the members voted for their favourite design. Fay Peter’s imaginative bee was rewarded with one of Jackie’s small creations.

Everyone enjoyed a day of creativity, good food, friendship and laughter with the side benefit of going home with a framed piece of decorative glass art.

Our thanks go to Gill Esam for leading spectrum and organising this event; to Jackie for inspiring us with her glass art; to Lesley who gave us a wonderful lunch and to the myriad of helpers behind the scenes who made cakes and coffee, served lunch and waited on tables.

We also say thank you and goodbye to Ruth Flood Powell who has assisted Gill with Spectrum for several years and has now moved to Devon. Jackie presented Ruth with a glass orchid in a plant pot.

Spectrum is all about sharing life and our God given gifts of creativity with one another and this glass art special was one of the highlights of the year.

LCBC Weekend Away 2019

Posted on 13 May 2019 at 07:18 by LCBC News

weekend 1Cleobury Mortimer 2019

For our LCBC Weekend Away this year around 120 of us headed to Shropshire for a long weekend together. In the mornings speaker Steve Levey led three thought-provoking sessions on Holiness, based on the book of Romans. We had time after these sessions to break into groups to reflect, discuss and pray about what we had heard. On Monday we shared our thoughts and prayers for our church and community in the light of what we had learned.

weekend 3In the afternoons there were various options to keep us busy, from sports, to music, drama, team activities or just relaxing at the centre. On Saturday a few of us went for a beautiful walk in the Shropshire countryside led by David; I then followed this with tea, cake and a chat while learning origami with Annii.

weekend 5The children enjoyed their sessions in the mornings with bible teaching and activities. Our boys just loved the freedom to run around and play with their friends.

The evening entertainments, games, quizzes and the famous Crendon's Got Talent, were very popular too.

weekend 4

The time to relax, talk, laugh and get to know each other better, with the time spent in teaching and worship, were a great combination.

Easter family fun

Posted on 24 Apr 2019 at 12:10 by LCBC News

Easter woodpileOn Easter Monday a number of us gathered together outside the church to make the most of nearby walks and the lovely weather and headed out on an Easter ramble.

Headed up by an energetic teenager and a small group of youngsters we walked from Long Crendon via Notley Abbey out to Chearsley.  The weather was perfect for talking and walking at a steady pace past the fields which were in full bloom; near the river, over the railway line and through some woods.  Jasper the dog stole the Easter fieldslimelight and had great fun practising his ‘I will just shake this water and mud off near these lovely people’. It’s a good job he is so cute!

It was hard to tell who was having the most fun: the fast walkers, the talkers, the exploring children or the Pastor who couldn’t resist joining the children on the wood pile.

On finding ourselves outside the pub in Chearsley for some refreshment we were a little bit early for opening time. We were not going to be put off on our quest for a cold drink , so we set off on the route back with more Easter walktime to talk with friends and get to know others better, ending up in a beer garden in Crendon.

It was a really lovely chance to be together on Easter Monday morning and to enjoy the British countryside whilst getting some good exercise.  Thanks LCBC for organising!

Spectrum Art Exhibition 2019

Posted on 11 Feb 2019 at 19:41 by LCBC News

art 30

More than a hundred visitors were welcomed into the Church hall for the third Spectrum Art Exhibition on Saturday 9th February 2019.

Art 1Members of the two monthly (intermediate and advanced) Spectrum groups had created over 200 art works which were on display. The groups are led by Gill Esam, supported by a team of volunteers and the occasional guest tutor.  Members of the advanced class are also being encouraged to lead sessions themselves.

Art 10Spectrum usually focuses on outdoor subjects, mainly working in watercolour, but the exhibition also included successful experiments in gouache, mixed media collage, the use of masking fluid and an indoor study titled ‘the snug’.

Pastor Neil Turton gave a short welcome address, speaking about how God created us as individuals with gifts and art 4talents and our own creativity, demonstrated in the variety of paintings created around a particular subject each month at Spectrum, each one giving a different perspective.

From detailed, close-up images of flowers in bud and birds in flight to lighthouses in front of stormy skies; wistful, misty agricultural landscapes; interpretations of a brightly coloured harbour scene and pictures of waterfalls, showing that it can be as much about the areas where you choose not to paint as what you do art 6include, the collection was an impressive array from natural settings to the built environment.

One section showed the results of an excursion to Waterperry Gardens, each painter selecting the scene they wanted to capture.

art 5This friendly group with over 30 members meet monthly on Wednesdays, with all equipment provided, so if you would like to join them please do get in touch. You can find more information here.

Spectrum special 2018

Posted on 15 Oct 2018 at 20:19 by James Poote

Spectrum 10The Startup and Spectrum Art Groups led by Gill welcomed life models for their all-day session on October 10th. The title Tails of the Unexpected was the clue and Suki and Kai, our canine models, bowled us over with their good looks and charm. Helen’s Suki, a Pomeranian, overcame her shyness and posed beautifully for us to draw her. Kai the St Bernard, Sheila’s gentle giant, looked at us with his dark soulful eyes and won us over with his good looks. It would have been enough of a challenge to draw them from a photograph but to have them constantly changing their position prompted more than once the comment, ‘Never work with children or animals!’

Spectrum 05Coffee and cake – one of Annii’s creations – were welcome distractions mid-morning.

The artwork continued until lunchtime when we adjourned to enjoy a delicious lunch prepared by Lesley and a team of helpers in the kitchen including Clare, Thelma, Alan and Vera.

After lunch Mark, who had bravely joined the drawing class in the morning, spoke to us about creativity and brought in some examples of woodwork he had done over the years. Being creative, whether doing art or woodwork, slows us down, helps us to be still in a frantic world and also helps us to see God in unexpected places.

Our God is creative – Genesis 1:1  In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth

Creation is to be enjoyed – Genesis 1:24  God saw that is was good”

We were created to be creative – Genesis 1:26  So God created man in his own image; in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

Your story of creativity…fits in God’s great story of Creation – 2 Corinthians 5:17  If anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation. The old has gone and the new has come  2 Corinthians 3:18  We are being transformed into his likeness (image) with ever-increasing glory.

Dangerously Alive: Simon Guillebaud at LCBC

Posted on 1 Jul 2018 at 15:13 by LCBC News

Simon G croppedSimon Guillebaud has just returned from 20 years in Burundi. Last week he came to LCBC to share some of his experiences. If you missed his talk you can listen to it here. Simon illustrated his talk with a number of photographs and slides which you can also download  here

Simon challenges us about life here in the affluent West. How the 'bombs' of apathy and materialism are just as deadly as the real bombs in Burundi. How are we to be different from those around us? Is your aim in life to arrive at death safely, comfortable but with a shrivelled soul?!

He gives many heart warming stories of God at work that will encourage and leave you wanting to know more.

Mind the gospel-gap

Posted on 17 Jun 2018 at 17:27 by LCBC News

Catherine HaddowHow aware are you of God being active in everyday life?  Does being ‘in Christ’ make any difference when you're up with a child at 3am or sitting in a traffic jam, in interactions with family and daily pressures of life?

If the answer is ‘not much’ .....welcome to the gospel gap!

On Thursday, June 7th, Catherine Haddow came to speak at our equipping evening for Christian women. Catherine is very involved in Biblical counselling and spoke on the gospel gap and the difference the gospel makes to our everyday life and interactions. We had a very full time together diagnosing the gospel gap and then looking at the cure.

If you weren't able to make the evening or would like to hear it all again please do listen to the recordings. We've also added Catherine's notes to accompany the recordings.
